YAKIMA – The wait is now over. It’s been six years since the Lake Roosevelt High School softball team earned a spot in the 2B girls state tournament.
Now the dream of playing at the state championships became a reality for the Lady Raiders.
However, the brackets would be unkind, as Lake Roosevelt would open up against arguably one of the toughest opponents a team could face in Adna.
Lake Roosevelt had the game tied at 2-2 in the third inning before Adna would eventually start to pull away for a 12-2 win on Friday (May 24) afternoon at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
After being dealt their first loss of the state tournament, the Lady Raiders would now be in the consolation bracket where they would face loser out/winner advance games the rest of the way.
Lake Roosevelt would go back and forth with Toledo in their next contest, but would end up falling 16-13 bringing their season to an end.
“The second game was a tough one for us,” said Jaci Gross, Head Coach for Lake Roosevelt. “Toledo had a similar team and we battled with everything we had. Coming out with a loss after that game was heartbreaking.”
The Lady Raiders finished with a 20-4 overall record, tied for Central Washington 2B League champions and won the CWB 2B League tournament. They placed third at the regional tournament.
“This is a season I will never forget,” Gross said. “Our softball family will always be just that, a family. Everyone contributed, and I couldn’t have been prouder. We ended the season rated seventh in state, the highest a softball team at LR has ever been ranked.”
They graduate six players as Cassidy Reyes (Colville tribal descendant), Lily Clark (Colville tribal descendant), Olivia Ludwig, Kelsie Olbricht, Haley Neddo and Addison Hansen leave their mark.
Adna would advance on to the state championship and would eventually beat Pe Ell / Willapa Valley 9-7 for the 2B girls state championship on Saturday.
