Omak grinds out 45-33 win over Chelan, move into second place in CTL
OMAK – After a slow start, Omak coach Mike Ables was happy to see his team finish off Chelan, especially considering how things went the first time the two teams played.
“Yesterday’s practice was really good,” Ables said. “The girls were really hyped up.”
When Omak played Chelan Dec. 18 in Chelan, the Lady Pioneers were down a couple key players and suffered a 54-19 loss.
Safe to say, there were a few players who didn’t forget that.
“We couldn’t wait until we played them again,” said Payton Abrahamson, a Colville tribal member.
Taya Mendoza made 13-of-14 free throws scoring 15 points in all, Abrahamson added 14 points and Omak grinded out a 45-33 win over Chelan in Caribou Trail League action on Tuesday night.
“This win’s big,” said Ables. “I think they were ready to play.”
His squad sits in second place in the Caribou Trail with just four league games left.
Chelan got off to a fast start as their defense created problems for Omak early on, building a 10-4 lead after the first quarter. Omak would battle back in the second quarter, turning up the intensity a notch and and taking a six-point lead (20-14) into halftime.
The Lady Pioneers defense came up big in the third quarter as they only gave up four points in the quarter, taking a nine-point (27-18) lead into the fourth.
Chelan’s Ashley Sams scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, keeping the Lady Mountain Goats in the game.
Chelan cut the lead to five points (35-30) with three minutes left in the fourth quarter but that would be the closest they would get. Omak would make good on the basics, making 12 free throws in the quarter to get a 12-point home win (45-33).
“This was really big for us,” said Ables as the Lady Pioneers have won their last four games.
Colville tribal members Trinity Fjellman scored three points and Breane George added a point for the Lady Pioneers.
Fjellman, a freshman was named student athlete of the month for November, for Omak High School.
Omak carries a 5-3 league record and 10-6 overall record as they have one more home game left and three road games.
With the loss, Chelan 3-4 in league sits in third place and are 8-6 overall.
