Pioneers keep pace with top CTL teams
OMAK – In need of a key bucket, Omak went to their sharpshooter, Colville tribal member Tre Marchand, in crunch time.
Marchand didn’t disappoint.
“I had to score,” said Marchand.
The junior guard scored 11 of his game high 18 points in the fourth quarter to help lift the Pioneers over Chelan 64-58 on Tuesday night in Caribou Trail League action.
“Tre can shoot. He can put the ball in the basket,” said Geoff Pearson, head coach for Omak. “When he’s on, it’s a beautiful thing.”
Omak held the lead throughout the game, but things begin to get a little tight in the last few minutes.
With a minute and 43 seconds left, Omak held a 10-point lead (57-47), but Chelan wouldn’t go away as they cut the deficit to four-points (60-56) with 26.2 seconds left in the game.
Omak would go on to finish off Chelan, earning their 12th win of the season.
“It’s a good win for us, Chelan there a scary team,” said Pearson. “We should of beat them by 20, but Chelan is a good team, just make sure we work on finishing.”
Omak started the game out with a few easy lay-ins and would lead 21-10 after the opening quarter.
The second quarter was a grind for both teams, but Omak would take a 10-point lead (28-18) into halftime.
The Pioneers led by as many as 13 points (35-22) at the 6:11 mark in the third quarter, but slowly started to see their lead dissolve.
Chelan started to make their shots and would close the lead to six-points (40-34) heading into the fourth.
The Mountain Goats started the fourth off by knocking down a 3-point shot, bringing them to within three (40-37) with nearly seven minutes left.
Omak would weather the storm and eventually build an 11-point lead (55-44) at the 2:22 mark.
Chelan would go on a 12-5 run in just under two minutes, closing the gap to four points (60-56) with 26.2 seconds left but the Pioneers would hold on for a six-point win (64-58) on Tuesday night.
Lonnie Cawston, a Colville tribal member, added eight points on the night to help the Pioneers move to 4-4 in league play and are 12-4 overall.
“Lonnie did a great job there in the fourth quarter of attacking,” said Pearson.
Pioneers’ big man Kanen Ables added 13 points.
Chelan falls to 1-6 in CTL action and 7-8 overall.
