Mya Moses scores game-tying goal for Okanogan late in the second half; Cashmere prevails in overtime for 2-1 win in district tournament

CASHMERE – With time slowly ticking down on their season, Okanogan trailed Cashmere 1-0 with less than five minutes left in the match.

Okanogan made one final push as they advanced the ball up field and somehow the ball bounced to the only senior on the squad, Mya Moses (Colville tribal member).

Moses, who was just outside of the box, paused for a second before booting a shot over the head of the Cashmere goalie into the net for the game-tying goal in the 77th minute, bringing it to a 1-1 game.

“I was just so excited and I knew that we could come back from it,” said Moses.

Okanogan would hold off numerous attempts by Cashmere in the final minutes to send the game into overtime.

“We never let down on them. We don’t care if they’re first in league or last in league. We’re going to play our game and we’re going to play hard,” said Moses. “We’re not scared of them at all.”

After getting out of the first five-minute overtime period, Okanogan wasn’t able to hold on in the second overtime.

Cashmere’s Clare Norman got behind the Okanogan back line and would end up scoring the game-winning goal, ending the hopes for Moses and company.

“I really thought that we were going to win,” said Moses as she had to fight back post-game emotions.

“This team is great. We had a great season, best team for Okanogan in a long time. Everybody is fast and they play hard and it showed in this game.”

Okanogan head coach Dean Klepec keeps churning out those ten win seasons as he once again finished the year with a ten plus wins and another trip to the district tournament.

Okanogan finished with 11 wins, six losses and one draw. They went 4-4 in CTL league action, finishing third in the league and have now made it four straight years of qualifying for the Caribou Trail League 1A District tournament.

Moses will be the only player that Okanogan will lose as they will be bringing back their entire squad.

Tribal members and sisters Daniele and Sydney Sparks along with Myra Rasmussen (Tribal descendant) will all be back for next year.
