Walker takes home two overall titles; Williams wins calf roping at Nespelem Celebration Rodeo in KMIRA circuit
NESPELEM – With all roads eventually leading to the Indian National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas this upcoming October, a few locals are showing that they belong to be there.
Francis Marchand (Colville tribal member) took a large step in paving that road last weekend first overall in the Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc and the Bareback at the King Mountain Indian Rodeo Association sanctioned Nespelem Celebration Rodeo.
Not an easy feat to accomplish.
“I’m feeling good,” said Marchand. “After this weekend I got a lot of my confidence back. Lifted my spirits more.”
Marchand would end up winning the both days in the bareback and in the saddle bronc.
“I’m so blessed to have the support I have behind me rodeoing and the fans who enjoy watching me ride. Thank you to all. You fuel me to keep on bettering myself.”
Marchand qualified for the INFR finals last year in the saddle bronc but it didn’t go as planned.
“It’s been a little rough,” Marchand said. “Last year at the Indian Finals wasn’t good for me. I lost that fire and that want. After this weekend, my mind was clear, everything fell into place. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the people around here.”
Jessie Walker (Colville tribal member) of Omak brought home top honors as she placed first in the Ladies Barrels and the Jr. Barrel Racing.
Oliver Williams placed first in the Calf Roping.
“I didn’t have any luck in Nespelem,” said Wyatt Covington. “I started a good bull but come up just short of the whistle.”
