OMAK – After winning back-to-back races on Friday and Saturday night, Riley Prescott only needed to place fifth or better on Sunday’s race to bring home at least a share of the overall title.

But he didn’t have any plans on sharing anything.

Prescott placed a lot better than fifth as he would go on to win his third straight race on the final day (Aug. 15) of this year’s World Famous Suicide Race earning his first overall title.

“It feels so surreal right now,” said Prescott (Colville tribal descendant) after the race on Sunday afternoon.  “A lot of hard work finally paid off.”

Prescott got out to a fast start, as he was the first one to the hill and would be one of the first ones into the Okanogan River.

Once in the river, he would have to battle for the lead.

“We got a good start, and me and Oliver [Pakootas] were just battling out in the water and I just beat him to the dike and got him from there,” said Prescott.

“I just want to thank everyone who has been in my corner and those who believed I could do this. I want to thank my horse, I want to thank Babe Palmer and Jonathan Abrahamson for trusting me."

Oliver Pakootas (Colville tribal member) and Onyx placed second on Sunday’s race and Scott Abrahamson (Colville tribal member) and Duranimal placed third to round out the top three.

Danny Trevino (Colville tribal member) and Digger placed fourth and Louis Zacherle (Colville tribal member) on Red Cloud placed fifth on Sunday.

This year’s race paid out $42,000 overall that was broken down each night. The king of the hill received two saddles, two buckles, two beaded medallions and two Pendleton jackets.

Abrahamson and Pakootas tied for second place in the overall points standings as both went on to earn 13 total points over the weekend.

Trevino and Digger placed fourth in the overall title standings with a total of seven points earned.

“It went good, I was hoping it would have went a little bit better but I can’t complain,” said Trevino. “I made some money three out the four nights, horses made it out alright, I’m alright.”

This year was one of Trevino’s best finishes in the overall points standings and he was able to watch his brother win his first overall title.

“I’m super proud, he’s got a natural talent for it,” Trevino said speaking about his younger brother Riley Prescott. “I couldn’t be more happier for him, way proud,”

Josiah Desautel (Colville tribal member) and Chief placed fifth overall with four total points earned.

Audrey Seymour (Colville tribal member) would be the only female jockey to ride in this year’s race.

"I love it," she says. "Hopefully the stars align next year, and I can do better and place higher."

Seymour from Inchelium managed to guide her horse Wind Walker out of tight spots throughout the weekend and expressed that they would be back for next year’s race.

One of the youngest riders in this year’s field was 16-year-old Garrett Mason (Colville tribal member) out of Inchelium. Mason rode the horse Thunder who is owned by Casey Nissen and they were sponsored by Lelah Mason and Daryle Palmer.

"I loved this," said Garrett Mason. "I came out here and tried my best and tried to have some fun."

Last year’s races were cancelled due to the Coronavirus.

“Definitely enjoyed watching our World Famous Omak Stampede Suicide Races this year,” said Andy Joseph Jr. Chairman for the Colville Confederated Tribes Business Council.
