Mackenzie Arden leads Wildcats over Chewelah in five-set thriller

WILBUR –Colville tribal member Mackenzie Arden and the Wilbur-Creston High School volleyball team got a small measure of revenge against Chewelah on Tuesday (Oct. 22) in Northeast 2B North League action.

Arden and Wilbur-Creston held on for a fifth-set win over the Cougars, winning 15-13. The last time these two schools played Chewelah won in straight sets (3-0) on Oct. 3.

“Losing to them in three to beating them in five, I can’t even explain it,” says Arden. “It’s so amazing, I’m so happy.”

After building a 4-0 lead in the fifth set, Chewelah would battle back and tie the game at 4-4. Wilbur-Creston would then take a brief 6-4 lead.

Chewelah would tie the game again at 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, and 9-9 before Wilbur-

Creston began to pull away.

The Lady Wildcats would take a quick 11-9 lead and then eventually a

13-9 lead.

Chewelah would battle back once more, cutting the deficit to one point at

13-12 and 14-13.

Arden would go on to serve out the set-winning point, giving Wilbur-Creston

a 15-13 win.

Arden finished with 15 kills and two blocks on the night.

“This is really big,” says Arden. “We push each other through.”

After starting the year at 2-3 Wilbur-Creston is currently 8-5 overall

on the year and 6-5 in NE 2B North League, giving them a hold on third place as districts near.

“From the beginning to now, it’s been amazing, the transformation,” says Arden.
