WILBUR – Mackenzie Arden (Colville tribal member) scored 23 points and helped propel Wilbur-Creston to a 57-37 win over Aleeka Smith-Miller (Colville tribal member) and Pateros on Friday night in non-league action.
“We came out aggressive, hard and fast paced,” said Arden. “It was great.”
Wilbur-Creston jumped out to an early 13-7 lead after the first quarter but Pateros wouldn’t go away as they kept the game close.
The Lady Wildcats held a 6-point lead (19-13) lead with 2:31 left in the second and that’s when they would go on a 10-0 run to take a 16-point lead into halftime (29-13).
Arden and the Lady Wildcats didn’t stop the pressure in the third quarter as they exploded for 21 points in the quarter, taking a commanding 50-22 lead after the third.
The Nannies came out in the fourth quarter with a fire, going on a 10-0 run of their own to cut the deficit down to 18-points (50-32) at the 4:28 mark, but they would draw no closer than that as Wilbur-Creston would grind out a 20-point win.
“It was just a rough game. We didn’t start out how we wanted too,” said Smith-Miller. “We finished better. I think we were doing good. We just have rough starts that were trying to fix, so we can start out how we finished.”
This makes the second consecutive year these schools have played. Last year, Smith-Miller scored 25 points to help Pateros to a 56-23 win.
Arden didn’t play in that game last year.
“I wasn’t here last year for them, but hearing about it, they said it was kind of sounded scary, like oh no. To have a team that they beat by a lot, to kill them by 20, I think it’s pretty great for us,” says Arden.
Wilbur-Creston currently sits at 2-2 on the year, as they will begin 2B Bi-County League play in the New Year.
Pateros falls to 0-5 on the season, as they will soon be jumping into Central Washington 1B league action.
