OKANOGAN- Producer of Merit Program application packets are available at the WSU Okanogan County Extension Office in the County Courthouse Room 101.

Hamilton Youth Foundation and WSU Okanogan County Extension sponsor the program, which aims to strengthen the participant’s knowledge, ability and skill as a feeder, manager and exhibitor of livestock.

The program is open to all youth bringing swine, sheep or steers to the Okanogan County Fair. There is also a similar program for poultry.

Incentives for youth to participate in the POM program include a cash award to cover the cost of entering the fair, a special rosette displayed on the animal at auction and their name listed in the newspaper as a participant.

The program asks each youth producer to create an educational display for the fair showcasing his or her hard work. It also requires that they enter in the fitting and showing contest, livestock-judging contest and display the total cost of producing the animal.

Those needing more information about the program may contact the WSU Extension office at 422-7245.
